THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, APRIL 20 . It was a show that gave the onlookers an idea of what it takes to tackle a blaze in an aircraft or in airport terminal buildings. Various rescue operations carried out during emergencies were demonstrated by the Airport Fire Service personnel attached to the international airport here as part of the Fire Services Day celebrations here today. The demonstrations, organised on the premises of the Fire Station in the airport, displayed the swiftness and alertness of the personnel in handling emergency situations. The operations commenced with the rescue of an unconscious person from the second floor of the building. He was rescued using the "chair knot" method and shifted in an ambulance to the hospital within minutes. Next, a person who had fractured his limbs was rescued on a stretcher from the second floor of the building. It was followed by the "firemen rescue act" in which a fire service personnel rushes an injured person, carrying him on his shoulder, from the first floor to the ground and then to hospital. A rescue act in which two fire service personnel rescue a dummy from fire, was the main attraction of the demonstration. The two fire service personnel, who were wearing fire-resistant suits and masks, scooped up the dummy from the flames and rushed "him" to hospital. Later, the personnel extinguished the fire. The Airport Director, Narinder Kaushal, was the first to extinguish a fire artificially created in a tray by the fire service personnel using fire extinguisher. On the request of the Fire Service officials, Jet Air's Station Manager, Vijay Bhushan, and a woman Customer Service Assistant, Abe Sabrin, also joined in to douse the flames. The live-fire demonstration came to an end with the "target hit" by three crash fire tenders. Coloured water, representing three colours of the national tri-colour, was jetted from devices called monitors on a target board fixed over 100 metres away. The Fire Service official, V.P. S. Kidave, led the demonstrations. Earlier, the Airport Director inaugurated the Fire Services Day celebrations. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Kaushal reminded the fire service personnel and the other airport agencies not to take safety lightly and urged them to be alert in their duties. Mr. Kaushal presented prizes to the winners of various competitions organised in connection with the week. The Senior Manager, Fire Services, D. Jayachandran, welcomed the gathering and the Deputy General Manager, Airport, R. K. Shrivastava, proposed the vote of thanks.
