J.N. Kaushal's death condoled

NEW DELHI, APRIL 20. The Sangeet Natak Akademi and its associate bodies have mourned the death of J.N. Kaushal, eminent theatre personality and also an Akademi awardee. He died on April 19.

A pedagogue, producer and writer, J.N. Kaushal was born in 1936 in West Bengal who studied theatre at the National School of Drama. Besides working for NSD, he was also associated with Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay at the Bharatiya Natya Sangh. As the chief of NSD's Repertory Company, he served his alma mater up to his retirement in 1997.

A pedagogue, producer and writer, he adapted numerous plays for NSD in Hindustani. He also authored two full-length plays - "Nange Paon" and "Amir Khusro" - and a number of one-act plays that he also directed.

For his varied work in theatre, J.N. Kaushal received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his overall contribution to the Indian theatre in 2002. He was also honoured with the World Theatre Day Awards of the Delhi Natya Sangh; the Parishad Samman of the Sahitya Kala Parishad, Delhi; the Kala Shree Award of the Punjabi Kala Sangam; the BM Shah Award of the Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Akademi.
