Shivakumar appeals for votes in Chamarajanagar

By Our Correspondent

CHAMARAJANAGAR, APRIL 21. The Minister for Urban Development, D.K. Shivakumar, has appealed to the people of Chamarajanagar to cast their votes in favour of the Congress considering the achievements of the Krishna Government in the last four-and-half years.

Addressing an election meeting here on Wednesday, Mr. Shivakumar said the Congress would not simply ask the people to support it.

He said the party asked the people to support it based on the achievements of the Krishna Government.

He enlisted the achievements and developments made under the Krishna Government saying it had introduced programmes such as Stree Shakti and Akshara Dasoha. It had waived interest on loans taken by farmers.

Mr. Shivakumar criticised the former Prime Minister, H.D. Deve Gowda, for blaming the Congress Government without reasons and wanted to know from him why several of his party members had defected to the Congress.

He said of the 44 non-Congress members of the dissolved Assembly, 13 had joined the Congress now. He wanted to know the contribution made by Mr. Deve Gowda to improve the farmers' lot when he was in power.

He said the Kannada Chaluvali Vatal Paksha President, Vatal Nagaraj, could only organise protests and nothing else. He appealed to the people not to elect such candidates, as they would not able to take up issues pertaining to the constituency effectively.

He sought their support to the party candidate in the Lok Sabha elections, Siddaraju, and B.P. Manjula, in the elections to the Assembly.

The former MLA, Guruswamy, who has joined the Congress, criticised Mr. Vatal Nagaraj for the poor quality of work in drawing water pipelines from T. Narasipur to Chamarajanagar. He said the cement pipelines drawn earlier were damaged and they had to be replaced with steel pipes causing a loss of crores of rupees.

Mr. Siddaraju and Dr. Manjula spoke.
