NEW DELHI, APRIL 21. Accusing the Congress of betraying the Sikhs by giving party tickets to those allegedly involved in the 1984 Sikh riots, the Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party president, Harsh Vardhan, today urged the Sikh community "to teach the Congress a lesson". He also announced the decision of a large number of Sikh leaders to join the BJP along with their supporters. They included Babar Singh Sandhu, nephew of freedom fighter, Shaheed Bhagat Singh. Stating that the Congress had gone back on its word of not giving tickets to those behind the `84 riots, Dr. Harsh Vardhan said that two of the candidates, Sajjan Kumar and Jagdish Tytler, had played an important role in the riots and the third, R. K. Anand had defended them in the court of law. The Sikh and minority leaders present on the occasion announced their decision to work for the defeat of the Congress candidates in the May 10 Lok Sabha polls. Besides Mr. Sandhu of the All-India Shaheed Bhagat Singh Memorial Trust, those who joined the BJP included Indrajeet Singh Asht, president of the Indian National Sikh Congress, and Shabnam Khan, who resigned from the Congress.
