The elementary school headmaster, Tamizharasan of Panaikulam, about 15 km from here, closed the school on April 12 (Monday) citing a local festival.

Education department authorities, on learning that no `festival' was held that day in the village, have placed him under a six-month suspension from today.

While the students were at home on April 12, the noon meal and anganwadi staff were on duty, not knowing that the headmaster had closed the school on his own, said Pon. Kumar, District Elementary Education Officer.

After the school was closed on Friday for the weekend, the headmaster declared a holiday on Monday. The Tamil New Year fell on Tuesday, an official holiday. The complaint against the headmaster was that ``to have continuous holidays, he closed the school,'' the officials said.
