Sir, It is amazing how the media, both print and electronic, can sweep the people off their feet. The hype over Valentine's Day, and recently, Akshaya Tritiya (widely publicised as an auspicious day for buying gold) is ample proof. For a change, why do the media not come out with new ideas such as No Expenditure Day and No Absenteeism from Work Day?

Sir, The attention cricketer Virendra Sehwag's marriage attracted, especially on television, accorded it the stature of a national event. While there can be no two opinions on the importance of a celebrity marriage, such unstinted prime time coverage of an ostentatious display in a country where women died in a stampede for free saris only a few days ago highlights the asymmetries existing in India.
