ANANTAPUR, APRIL 23. The Congress is committed to undoing the injustice heaped on the drought-prone Anantapur district by the Telugu Desam rule, if it is voted to power, the Congress leader, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has said. In his whirlwind tour of the district today as part of `Jaitra Yatra,' Dr. Reddy addressed more than dozen election meetings covering 10 Assembly constituencies and conducted road shows. Public response to his meetings was overwhelming. Speaking at Tadipatri he said the TDP Government had neglected farmers and farm workers. Alleging that the Government had no mercy on the families of farmers who had committed suicide and the hunger deaths of weavers, Dr. Reddy assured that the Congress, if elected, would take care of their welfare. Handri-Neeva project would be taken up at 40 tmc ft capacity and free power would be provided to agriculture. A radar station would be set up to carry out create artificial rain on a regular basis. Drip and sprinkler irrigation systems would be provided with 90 per cent subsidy for horticulture and employment would be given to Dalits and the poor, he said.
Referring to the TDP candidate of Tadipatri, K. Suryapratap Reddy, the former CLP leader said he was with the Congress four years ago. He backstabbed the party and switched over to the TDP last year, Dr. Reddy charged. At Narpala he asked farmers not to pay farm power dues saying the Congress Government, if elected, would waive the dues. Urging women to put an end to the `anti-people' rule of the TDP, Dr. Reddy promised 25 per cent concession in fee for registration of properties in the name of women. He assured to bring back `Indiramma rajyam' if people helped the Congress in uprooting the TDP.
