KOLKATA,
APRIL 23.
Long jumper Anju B. George has been selected as the `Sportsperson of the Year' for 2003 while Indian cricket skipper Sourav Ganguly bags a special award for becoming the best National skipper in the Calcutta Sports Journalists' Club annual awards announced on Friday.
Ganguly was given the honours for overhauling Mohammed Azharuddin's record of leading India to a maximum number of wins in Tests, while Anju made the country proud by grabbing the bronze in the Paris World championship.
The selected sportspersons would get the prizes at the CSJC's annual awards function on April 28.
The list: Sportsperson of the Year: Anju B. George (track and field); Junior sportsperson of the year: Sania Mirza (tennis); Special awards: Jaideep Mukerjea contribution to tennis; Subhas Bhowmick: best coach; Sourav Ganguly: best Indian captain; Rohan Gavaskar: debut for senior Indian team. State (West Bengal) awards: Football: Sasthi Duley; Cricket: Shiv Shankar Paul; Hockey: K. Bishambar Singh; Table tennis: Poulami Ghatak; Aquatics: Gairik Bardhan; Athletics: Soma Biswas; Volleyball: Thakurmoni Oram; Basketball: Suhas Bhattacharya; Tennis: Shivika Burman; Chess: Sandipan Chanda; Archery: Nabanita Ghatak.
