Gulf returnees to back UDF

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM APRIL 23. The All India Gulf Returnees and Employees Association has announced that it would support the UDF candidates, V.S. Sivakumar, Ramesh Chennithala and V.M. Sudheeran who are contesting from the Thiruvananthapuram, Mavelikara and Alappuzha constituencies in the May 10 Lok Sabha elections. The association said that it had decided to extend its support to these three candidates since they had raised the problems of Gulf expatriates in Parliament. The Association said that it would decide soon on the stand to be adopted in other constituencies.

Bardhan to join campaign

The CPI general secretary, A.B. Bardhan, and the national secretaries, D. Raja and J. Chitharanjan, would join the LDF's poll campaign next week. According to a CPI release here, Mr. Bardhan would speak at Thiruvananthapuram, Kottarakara, Mavelikara, Changanassery and Thrissur between May 1 and 5; Mr. Raja at Thiruvananthapuram, Adoor, Alappuzha and Kollam between May 1 and 4 and Mr. Chitharanjan at Thrissur, Thiruvananthapuram, Adoor, Kollam and Alappuzha between April 26 and May 4. The CPI State secretary, Veliyam Bhargavan, would address meetings at Kannur, Kozhikode, Thiruvananthapuram, Muvattupuzha, Adoor, Malappuram and Thrissur between April 25 and May 7.

MCA admission

The Commissioner for Entrance Examinations (CEE) has invited applications for admission to the Master of Computer Applications course, MCA- 2004. The admission will be based on an entrance test to be conducted at Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam and Kozhikode, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, on May 29. The allotment of seats will be done by the Director of Technical Education. Application forms are available at the GPO, Thiruvananthapuram, and from the head post offices in the headquarters of all the other districts. The last date for submitting applications is May 19.

M.Sc. Nursing rank list

The Provisional rank list of candidates who had appeared for the entrance test conducted on April 17, 2004, for admission to M.Sc. Nursing - 2002 has been published. The results are available at the website "cee-kerala.org". It will also be available at all district information offices from April 16 onwards. The selection committee under the chairmanship of the Director of Medical Education (DME) will prepare the select list and wait list of candidates. The admission memos to the candidates selected will be issued by the DME. Candidates desirous of obtaining their mark lists of the entrance test should apply to the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations, before May 25.

Discount for KCHR books

The Kerala Council for Historical Research (KCHR) has decided to offer 30 per cent discount on all its publications from today to May 3 to mark the World Book Day. The books on sale include William Logan's Malabar Manual, Travancore State Manual, Kochi State Manual, History of Travancore, Perspectives on Kerala History, Cultural Formation of Kerala, Kerala Society Papers and District Gazetteers. Arrangements have also been made to send books by post to research institutions and individuals outside the State free of postage charges. Details can be had from the KCHR office at Vyloppilly Samskriti Bhavan here, a KCHR release said.

Healthcare programmes

The Indian Institute of Emergency Medical Services (IIEMS), a non-profit charitable trust, in association with the American Heart Association and the Basic Trauma Life Support Inc. U.S., is organising a few programmes for the healthcare providers in the State during the May-June period. The first of them will be on basic life support and the second and third on advanced level basic trauma life support. They will be held at the SN Trust Medical Mission Hospital at Kollam on May 22, May 23 to 24 and May 25 to 26 respectively. Programmes on basic life support and advanced cardiac life support will be held at the Muthoot Plaza at Thiruvananthapuram on May 28 and May 29 to 30 respectively. The remaining programmes will be held at the Hotel Yuvarani Residency at Kochi— that on basic life support on June 1 and that on advanced cardiac life support on June 2 and 3.

Holiday declared

The Union Government has declared May 10 as a holiday for its offices in the State on account of the election to the Lok Sabha. This was announced in Thiruvananthapuram today by T.G. Prabhakaran, secretary, Central Government Employees Welfare Coordination Committee.

JD(U) unit comes out of NDA

KOTTAYAM April 23. The Kerala unit of the Janata Dal (United) today came out of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Kerala condemning the BJP leadership in the State for their total failure to accommodate the interests of the religious minorities, backward and Dalit sections of society. Speaking to presspersons, Jose Ambattu, general secretary of the JD(U), who has filed his nomination papers in Kottayam parliament constituency, said his party would contest in five more segments viz. Chirayinkeezhu, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Kollam and Kozhikode. He said that his party, led by the NDA convener George Fernandes, would continue in the coalition at the national level. Presence of secular parties like the JD(U) was essential in the BJP-led coalition to ensure that sectarian agenda of the Sangh Parivar did not get implemented by the coalition, he said. His party would take an anti-UDF, anti-LDF and anti-NDA stance in the forthcoming Parliament elections.

Election boycott

Leaders of the All Kerala Plus Two Lab Assistants Association said here today that they, their families and well-wishers would boycott the coming parliamentary elections in protest against the failure of the UDF to recognise and regularise their appointments. According to its leader, Johncy Jacob, they had supported the UDF in the last elections on the basis of the promise that their postings would be regularised if the UDF came to power. As they had failed to fulfil the promise, the Association would work against the UDF candidates, he said. For the last five years they had been working without regular remuneration, he added.

SBI ambience

KOCHI April 23. After computerising and introducing single window concept at all its branches in Kerala, the State Bank of India (SBI) has started improving the ambience of its branches. Speaking on the occasion of dedicating the newly refurbished Broadway branch at Ernakulam, the General Manager, G.M. Krishnan, said branches would soon have a new-look matching the ambience of the best bank branches in the advanced countries. The SBI is opening an exclusive Housing Finance branch at Ernakulam shortly and also branches at Thripunithura and Pattambi.

Seminar on Dalit issues

KOLLAM APRIL 23. The economist, M. Kunjaman, will inaugurate a seminar on `Globalisation and Dalit issues' organised by the Gramsci Samskarika Padana Kendram here on April 27. On the occasion, Dr. Kunjaman will formally release the Malayalam translation of Anand Teltumbde's book, `Ambedkar and Marxism'. The book was translated by the journalist, B. Binu.

Takes charge

Varadharajan has taken over as the new general manager of the Kollam Telecom District. He was earlier general manager (Telecom) at Tirunelveli, has had a stint at the installation wing of the Tamil Nadu circle and in Assam.

Elected

PATHANAMTHITTA APRIL 23. Anandan Chittar and B. Gopakumar have been elected president and secretary of the district unit of the Kerala Forest Protective Staff Association at the district meet of the association held here the other day.

Three killed

THRISSUR APRIL 23. Two persons were killed when the motorbike they were riding collided with a private bus at Irinjalakuda, near here, this morning. The police identified the deceased as Lenin Joy, 21, of Palathinkal House, Edathiruthy, and Jomy Thomas, 24, of Pallippattu house, Irinjalakkuda. In another incident, the driver of a jeep that was transporting equipment belonging to the troupe of the magician, Gopinath Muthukad, was killed when the vehicle collided with a tourist bus at Kunnamkulam this morning.
