3 killed during bandh in Assam

By Our Special Correspondent

GUWAHATI, APRIL 23. Curfew was clamped and the Army was called out in south Assam's Goalpara district today after three persons were killed during a 72-hour bandh called by the Sixth Schedule Demand Committee of the Rabha-Hasong Autonomous Council.

Police said three persons were lynched by a mob when they tried to enforce the bandh at Krishnai area. Another person sustained injuries. Apprehending further trouble, the district administration clamped an indefinite curfew from 1.30 p.m. in the district barring three places — Matia, Baguan and Mornoi. The Army was called out to assist the civil administration in defusing the tension. The troops staged a flag march in sensitive areas, police said.

The bandh was called to press for the demand for creation of a territorial council under the provision of the Sixth Schedule on the line of the recently formed Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC).
