Law graduates dominate poll scene

MANGALORE, APRIL 23. The law graduates are dominating the election in Mangalore Lok Sabha Constituency this time. Of the 48 candidates in the fray in nine Assembly constituencies of Dakshina Kannada, 20 are graduates of different disciplines. Of the four candidates, who are in the fray in Mangalore Lok Sabha Constituency, three are law graduates. They are the former Chief Minister, M. Veerappa Moily (Congress), the two-time MLA from Puttur, D. V. Sadananda Gowda (Bharatiya Janata Party), and former MLA, A. K. Subbaiah (Janata Dal-Secular).

Of the 20 graduates who are contesting from different Assembly constituencies in Dakshina Kannada, four have legal education. Of these four, two are from Ullal Assembly Constituency. They are U.T.Fareed of the Congress and Muzafeer of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML). The remaining law graduates are Kamalakshi Mohan of Kannada Nadu contesting in Puttur Assembly Constituency, and K. Mathai of Kannada Nadu who is contesting in Mangalore Assembly Constituency.

Of the 48 candidates in Assembly election in the district, the least educated is Padmanabha Kottari, a BJP candidate from Vitla constituency. He has only passed first standard. B. Raghu of the Congress from Sullia Assembly Constituency is the only doctor in the fray. Robert Rosario of Kannada Nadu in Moodbidri Assembly Constituency is a graduate engineer.

Six candidates have studied up to PUC and eight up to SSLC. The education of rest of the candidates ranges from fourth standard to ninth standard.

Meanwhile, according to the Dakshina Kannada Election Watchdog Committee, no candidate has the background of criminal cases. Some advocates owing allegiance to the BJP have formed "Vakeelara Vedike" (lawyers' forum) to campaign for the BJP.
