By Our Staff Reporter
TIRUCHI, APRIL 23 . The Department of Public Libraries launched an innovative campaign to create an awareness, among members of the public, of developing the habit of reading books, as part of observance of the `World Book Day' today. A group of people comprising members of the Central Library Readers' Forum and volunteers of the non-governmental organisation `Sathyam Trust' along with the staff of the Library Department went round parts of the city by the Mobile Library van. The street corner campaign was held at nine vantage points where they explained the happiness of the hobby of reading books. They distributed pamphlets to the onlookers and members of the public. The campaign, which lasted for a few hours, was conducted at the Chathiram Bus stand, the Tamil Sangam, Marakkadai, Palakkarai, Melapudhur, Head Post Office roundtana, Junction and the Central Bus Stand. Earlier, flagging off the campaign van at the District Central Library Office, the principal of the Bishop Heber College, M. Marcus Diepen Boominathan, explained the influence of books in shaping the destiny of an individual. The president of the Readers' Forum, P. V. Devaraj, said though there was an increase in the number of publications and the number of books, there was a fall in the number of book lovers. The vice-president of the Readers' Forum, M. R. Asokan, the president of the Majestic Millenium Lions Club, A. Ananthakrishnan, and the district chairman of the Lions Club of Tiruchi, Sadiq Ali, were among those who participated in the awareness rally.
