Temperature

TIRUCHI, APRIL 23. The city today registered a maximum temperature of 38.7 degree Celsius and a minimum of 27.5 degree Celsius.

Commit suicide

Two young lovers reportedly committed suicide by jumping in front of the Pallavan Express at Valadi near here this morning.

According to official sources, Selvakumar (25) of Manakal and Sakuntala (20) of Panayapuram, said to belong to different communities, resorted to the act, after their affair was resented by elders in their families. Their heads and torsos were lying scattered over a distance, sources added.

The railway police have registered a case.

Found dead

An unidentified middle-aged man was reportedly found dead in the vicinity of the Coleroon Checkpost today.

Police sources said the deceased, a beggar, was weak and immobile for a week and refused to take food given by passers-by.

Dowry case

A case of dowry harassment was filed against Syed Malik (25) of Ramachandra Nagar, his parents, Habibunisha and Syed Ameer and sisters, Fathima and Parveen by the Cantonment All Women Police, on Thursday, based on a complaint registered by Syed Malik's wife, Anarkali Begum (20).

Police sources said Syed Malik and his parents were arrested and remanded to custody.

Youth, boy held

The Fort Station police on Thursday arrested a youth and a 10-year-old boy in separate jewellery lifting incidents, over the past few days. The youth was remanded to custody today while the boy was sent to the Juvenile Home.

Uday Arokiyaraj (23) of Mudhaliar Chathiram confessed to having snatched chains of Chandra (45) of Beemanagar and Menaka (23) of Siruganur, weighing 10 grams and 8 grams respectively, at the Chathiram Bus Stand. Police claimed to have apprehended the accused finding his movements suspicious.

The boy was caught red-handed while attempting to lift the purse containing four grams of gold jewellery and cash Rs. 1,200, from the bag held by S. Girija of Anna Nagar, in a city bus, on Thursday.

Surgery

A city hospital claimed to have performed a `revision total hip replacement surgery' on a 74-year-old patient, Abdul Samad.

A statement issued here today by Vijay Poly Clinic said the surgery was performed on the patient, who had undergone Hemiarthoplasty four years ago, after he complained of thigh pain and femoral stem loosening.

The patient's previous prosthesis was removed and replaced with `cemented total hip replacement arthoplasty (both femoral head and acetabulum), the statement added.

Mettur level

The level in the Mettur dam stood at 25.71 feet today. The inflow was 161 cusecs, and there was no discharge.
