HYDERABAD, APRIL 23. Vehicle owners, beware! Vehicle thefts are on abnormal rise in the twin cities, be it two or four wheelers. Before you lose your vehicle, follow the advice of the city police and check the attempts of criminals. According to statistics, the number of vehicles stolen in the past three months alone is: 322 two-wheelers (49 recovered), 24 three-wheelers (17 recovered) and 45 four-wheelers (seven recovered) from different parts of the city. In 2003, the number of vehicles stolen was: 1,590 two-wheelers (426 recovered), 231 three-wheelers (80 recovered) and 157 four-wheelers (79 recovered). Similarly in 2002, the figures were 1,011 two-wheelers (236 recovered), 144 three-wheelers (60 recovered) and 109 four-wheelers (73 recovered). What can be done to avoid such thefts? According to the DCP (Detective Department), K. Narasimha Murthy, vehicles should not be parked at unauthorised places and secondly, original documents not be kept in vehicles. Also, he advised owners not to park vehicles outside the residence during night. Mr. Murthy said that four-wheeler owners should go for central locking system. "There is an abnormal increase in vehicle-lifting cases. Stolen vehicles are being disposed of by creating forged and fabricated documents," says Mohammed Ismail, DCP-II of Detective Department. He has suggested that registration numbers and the owner's name should be etched on different parts of the motor vehicle to identify it in case of theft. "Many people park their two-wheelers without handle locking or without shutting off the fuel knob. This facilitates the thief to escape with the vehicle easily," he says. Next time, when you park your car or bike, be conscious of elements on the prowl, eager to zoom away with your vehicle.
