BANGALORE, APRIL 23. The Karnataka High Court on Friday permitted private medical colleges to admit in-service candidates with institutional preference and non-resident Indians to postgraduate courses for 2004-05. The petitioners, Karnataka Private Medical Colleges' Association and five others, had challenged the decision of the Justice S. Venkataraman Committee in not allowing admissions based on such classifications. In his order, Justice R. Gururajan said: "The admission process, classification of in-service candidates, institutional preferences, and non-resident Indians (NRI) is prima facie permissible on the details placed on record." "In the circumstances, I deem it proper to permit the petitioners to provide admissions to in-service candidates with institutional preference and NRI candidates. The said admissions should not exceed 20 of the 50 per cent. The said selection is subject to the approval of the Justice Venkataraman Committee." Further, any admission was subject to the result of the writ petition, he said.
Directive
Justice Gururajan has directed the State Government to maintain status quo on the intake for admission to postgraduate dental courses as per the Supreme Court orders of March 2003 and January 2004, respectively. Mr. Justice Gururajan passed an interim order on Friday on a petition by R.V. Dental College, Bapuji Educational Association's Dental College and Hospital, Bapuji Educational Institution's College of Dental Sciences, Davangere, and Sri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara Education Society's SDM Dental College.
