BMP gears up to meet rain-related eventualities

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, APRIL 23. The Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) Commissioner, M.R. Sreenivasa Murthy, said on Friday that the palike had pressed into service 150 workers and a dozen vehicles to clear the trees that had fallen due to heavy rain on Thursday.

Addressing presspersons here, Mr. Murthy said the palike had augmented its relief teams, which would be ready to help people affected by rain.

Two ambulances, equipment, and 100 workers would be kept ready in the palike's control rooms at zonal offices and the central office, he added.

He urged the people to contact the control rooms in the event of any eventuality.

Many trees fell in Malleswaram, Sadashivanagar and surrounding areas causing traffic jams on several roads. Besides, rainwater entered low-lying areas in Ramchandrapuram and Laxminarayanpuram affecting over 100 families.

Work on widening the bridge near Sujatha cinema, taken up as part of Rajajinagar grade separator project, would be completed within a week, the commissioner said.

The palike had distributed food packets and some ration to the families affected by rain, he added.

Replying to a question, Mr. Murthy said branches of roadside trees would be pruned from time to time. "We cannot do away with the trees. We will have to manage them and take precautions that they do not cause any damage," he added.

The palike would not plant gulmohar saplings as they were expected to pose danger as they grow up.

"We will plant saplings that will not pose any danger," he said.

People can contact the BMP head office on ph: 22221188, 22100031, 22100035 and 22975595; west zone on ph: 23341692; south zone on ph: 26566362; and east zone on ph: 22975803 during crisis.
