BANGALORE, APRIL 23. The owner of the land at Shankarapuram where the rain tree now in the news stands is a worried man. H.S. Channakeshavaswamy, who was given the land by the Shankar Math, said here on Friday that "the tree is in the middle of the small plot and I cannot build a house without cutting it." He also said most of the tree was already cut and it could topple any time, possibly causing an accident. Mr. Channakeshavaswamy, who belongs to Sringeri, had made over all of his valuable property in Sringeri to the math. In return for this, the Shankaracharya of Sringeri Math gave him this plot in Bangalore, according to the manager of the math, here. The math applied for the division of this plot measuring 40 ft. X 55 ft. and the khata was transferred according to rules by the BMP. "I started work on cutting the tree after obtaining permission from the Deputy Chief Conservator of Forests. On Friday, I was told the Forest Department had stayed cutting of the tree following representation from some environmentalists. The partly cut tree is now leaning to one side and could damage the property of neighbours. I cannot be responsible for any mishap," Mr. Channakeshavaswamy said. Meanwhile, S.S. Rajan, the neighbour who started the campaign the save the 60-year-old tree, said he and his daughter were removed by the police on charges of trespass and taken to the Shankarapuram police station and later released. "This campaign will go on till the tree is saved," he said.
