Contest between Congress, BJP for Udupi Lok Sabha seat

By Our Staff Correspondent

UDUPI, APRIL 24. A keen contest between the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is on the cards in the Udupi Lok Sabha Constituency.

The constituency comprises eight Assembly segments. While five segments are in Udupi district, three are in Dakshina Kannada district. The Byndoor, Kundapur, Brahmavar, Udupi, and Kaup segments are in Udupi district, and the Bantwal, Moodbidri, and Surathkal segments are in Dakshina Kannada district.

There are 11,38,398 voters in the constituency. The Congress has re-nominated Vinaykumar Sorake for the seat, which he won in the 1999 election by defeating the BJP candidate, I.M. Jayaram Shetty, by a margin of 31,000 votes. The Congress led in six of the eight Assembly segments in the constituency then.

Mr. Sorake belongs to the Billava community, which is dominant in the constituency. The Congress has consolidated its hold on Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts after the 1999 election. It had won all the seats in the Udupi Zilla Panchayat and performed well in the election to the Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat.

The Bunt and Mogaveera communities occupy the second and third places, respectively, in the constituency. The BJP has fielded the former Minister, Manorama Madhwaraj, who belongs to the Mogaveera community.

To counter this, the Congress has nominated Ms. Madhwaraj's son, Pramod Madhwaraj, for the Brahmavar Assembly seat.

Ms. Madhwaraj, who was in the Congress for three decades, joined the BJP recently.

She was a Minister in the Congress governments for a decade-and-a-half. She was the Chairperson of the Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation till recently.

While the BJP is banking on the "Vajpayee factor'' to win over the voters, the Congress is highlighting the achievements of the S.M. Krishna government. The Congress lost the Udupi Lok Sabha seat only twice in 1967 to the Swatantra Party and in 1998 to the BJP.

The Janata Dal (Secular) and the Kannada Nadu party have fielded Taranath Shetty and Oswald Fernandes for the seat.
