CoD forms team to probe KAS exam. scandal

By Our Special Correspondent

BANGALORE, APRIL 24. The Corps of Detectives (CoD) has acted on an order from the State Government and formed a special team to investigate the Karnataka Administrative Service (KAS) examination scandal.

In the incident, which made headlines in 1998, four persons, reportedly from the same family, got four of the top ten ranks in the KPSC examination to recruit KAS officers. Two of the top officials whose involvement was suspected, A.K. Monappa and Rameshwarappa, were suspended by the Government earlier this year.

A criminal case in this connection was registered at the Vidhana Soudha Police Station. The Home Department has now passed an order handing over the case to the CoD.

According to the Director-General of Police (CoD), S.N. Borkar, the special team comprises a Superintendent of Police, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, and two inspectors. They will be reporting on a day-to-day basis to a Deputy Inspector-General of Police about the progress in the investigation.

"A legal adviser will be made available to the team. Action has been taken to obtain all necessary records relating to the case from the relevant authorities," Mr. Borkar said.

Back in 1998, the KPSC had conducted an internal enquiry. Following the enquiry, it recommended disciplinary action against the two officials, who were suspended this year. The case was heard at different stages by the Karnataka Administrative Tribunal and the Karnataka High Court, with the latter even ordering revaluation of all answer scripts.
