AGAP downs SBI

HYDERABAD, APRIL 24. AG Andhra Pradesh recorded a hard-fought 3-2 win over State Bank of India in the A-1 division hockey league match at the Begumpet Police Stadium here on Saturday.

AG AP shot into lead in the 13th minute through winger Habib Mohammad's solo effort. But the Bankmen levelled through an enterprising Nagaraj within three minutes. At halftime, the teams were locked one-all.

In the second session, K. Karunakar's opportunism saw AG AP take the lead again in the 31st minute when he slipped through a crowded defence and essayed a delectable carpet drive. Nagaraj enlivened the proceedings with the equaliser for the Bankmen in the 47th minute. AG AP raised the tempo in the last 10 minutes and the match-winner came through Habib Mohammad. AG AP's centre-half Sayeed muffed a penalty stroke in the final minutes.

In all, SBI earned five penalty corners while the rivals three.

In the B division league play-off match at the Gymkhana Grounds, MCH Ameerpet recorded a comfortable 3-0 win over BHEL Ramachandrapuram after being locked goalless at the break.

In the 38th minute winger Harmeeth Singh was on target and within seven minutes he netted the second goal. Kushwant Singh completed the tally with another fine solo effort for MCH outfit.
