Nimmy clinches title

KOZHIKODE, APRIL 24. Nimmy A. George of Ernakulam won the State junior girls' chess championship at the Chess India Complex here on Saturday. She drew her fifth and final round encounter with Aswathy of Thrissur and finished with four points.

Though Meenu Rajendran of Thiruvananthapuram and R. Aparna from Kannur also had four points, a superior progressive score helped the top-seeded Nimmy clinch the title. Meenu was placed second and Aparna third.

The fourth to sixth places were taken by Aswathy (Thrissur), C.P. Athia (Kozhikode) and S. Roshni (Kannur). The top six have qualified to represent Kerala in the National junior meet, to be held at the same venue from May 10.

The placings (five rounds):

1-3. Nimmy A. George (Ekm), Meenu Rajendran (Tvm) and R. Aparna (Knr) 4; 4. Aswathy (Tsr) 3.5; 5-11. C.P. Athira (Kzde), S. Roshni (Knr), S. Sreedevi (Pkd), N.V. Anjali (Pkd), R. Karthika (Kzde), Teenu Thomas (Ekm) and Gayathri Balu (Kzde) 2.5; 12. W. Ajilta (Ekm) 1.5.
