PM's appeal

Sir, — The remarks of the Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, that the Gujarat riots should not have happened, and that we should resolve that another Gujarat does not happen, come in the wake of the exit poll results for the first phase of the elections.

If Mr. Vajpayee indeed means what he says, will he dismiss the Narendra Modi Government?

Ram Puniyani,
Mumbai

Sir, — If Mr. Vajpayee is serious, he should sack Mr. Modi and the others responsible for the Gujarat riots. The least he can do is assure the nation that Mr. Modi does not form a part of the famous line of succession he spoke of a week ago.

R. Nagarajan,
Kovilpatti, T.N.

Sir, — Even after the Supreme Court's indictment of the Modi Government, `rule of law' seems a distant dream for the minorities. Worse, Mr. Modi is still one of the BJP's star campaigners.

How can anyone believe that the minorities will be safe in the NDA regime? Only some time ago, Mr. Vajpayee said he did not require the support of Muslims to win elections.

Faridabad, Haryana

Sir, — Is the Prime Minister's loud appeal to Muslims for support genuine? Had it been real, he would have dismissed Mr. Modi, who upheld neither raj dharma nor manava dharma; his Government would have reined in Praveen Togadia; and he would have seriously attempted to reform the Sangh Parivar from within.

Divi Kumar,
Vijayawada, A.P.

Sir, — Mr. Vajpayee's appeal should have been made to the perpetrators of the carnage and not to the victims. Why does he not openly apologise to Muslims? And why do he and other NDA leaders specifically mention the Indo-Pakistan peace effort in their address to Muslims? Do they assume that Muslim voters are more concerned about peace with Pakistan than peace with fellow Hindu citizens?

G. Prakash,
Guntur, A.P.
