Sir, Whether India is shining or not, politicians are shining. Thanks to the Election Commission, we are blessed with information on the assets of the candidates contesting the polls. It is obvious that the wealth declared is only the tip of the iceberg.

* * * Sir, The present political climate betrays acrimony among opponents, what with candidates spewing venom against one another. It is worth recalling the 1937 Madras Assembly elections in which S. Sathyamurthy was pitted against A.R. Mudaliar. During the door-to-door canvassing, they ran into each other. Sathyamurthy greeted Mudaliar, and wished him success in the election. Mudaliar reciprocated the good wishes. There were no group clashes; the two were perfect gentlemen.
