dated April 26, 1954: Radhakrishnan's appeal

The Vice-President, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, has called upon the people to get rid of all sorts of distinctions of caste, creed and provincial jealousies to enable them to preserve the country's freedom. Dr. Radhakrishnan, who was declaring open in Ahmedabad on April 24 the 100-bed Sheth L.G. Hospital, built at a cost of Rs.20 lakhs, said that it was the "unwisdom" of our people who indulged in such distinctions of caste that exposed the country to outside exploitation and political subjugation. When power was transferred to the people of India, fears were expressed that India would be balkanised and "torn to pieces." But Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel with his great tact and firmness integrated India. The Bombay Chief Minister, Mr. Morarji Desai, who is also the chairman of the Trust, which built the hospital, said that the trust had successfully carried out the experiment of not allowing private practice by doctors working in the hospital.
