329 hypersensitive polling booths in Shimoga

SHIMOGA, APRIL 25. The stage is set for the election to the Lok Sabha and Assembly seats in Shimoga district on Monday.

There are 12,57,953 voters. Elaborate arrangements have been made for the smooth conduct of the election.

A total of 3,300 police and paramilitary personnel have been deployed in the district. The authorities have identified 329 polling booths as hypersensitive and 443 as sensitive.

The district administration has set up a helpdesk for the Lok Sabha and Assembly seats.

It provides details such as the poll officer of the constituency and his telephone number. Six candidates are contesting for the Lok Sabha seat - S. Bangarappa (BJP), Ayanur Manjunath (Congress), G. Madappa (Janata Dal-S), Doddanna (Janata Party), D.M. Chandrappa (Kannada Nadu), and Sachidevi (independent).

There are 62 candidates for eight Assembly seats. Prominent among them are the members of the dissolved Assembly, Kagodu Thimmappa (Sagar); H.M. Chandrasekharappa (Shimoga); Karianna (Holehonnur reserved); G.D. Narayanappa (Hosanagar); Kumar Bangarappa (Sorab); Araga Jnanendra (Tirthahalli); and M.J. Appaji (Bhadravati).

The BJP leaders, B.S. Yediyurappa, and K.S. Eshwarappa, who were defeated in the 1999 election, are again contesting for the Shikaripur and Shimoga constituencies, respectively.
