Rathore finishes sixth

NEW DELHI, APRIL 25. World Cup bronze medallist, Major Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, finished sixth in double trap in the shooting World Cup in Athens on Sunday.

Rathore won the shoot-off along with Ahmed Almaktoum of the UAE to get into the final, after the two had tied at 134 along with Vassili Mossin of Russia, and had to fight for two of the six berths in the final. Rathore had a 38 in the final, as he missed five early birds, three in the middle and four in the end, and thus had to be content with the sixth position with a 172 out of 200. He had shot rounds of 46, 46 and 42 in the preliminary phase.

Almaktoum came up with a 43 in the final to take the bronze with a 177, behind Daniele Di Spigno of Italy and Zheng Wang of China who shot 185 and 180 respectively.

The two other Indians, Moraad Ali Khan and Ronjan Sodhi had identical scores of 124 in tying for the 28th slot. Moraad had rounds of 42, 40 and 42 while Ronjan came up with improved figures every round in a series of 38, 41 and 45.

In the men's air rifle, Gagan Narang finished a creditable seventh with a 697.0. He had a 595 in the qualification series, following rounds of 99, 98, 99, 100, 100 and 99. In the final, Gagan shot 10.2, 10.1, 10.5, 10.5, 10.2, 10.0, 10.5, 10.3, 10.3 and 9.4. Gagan, who shot the fourth best score in the final with a 102.0, could have finished sixth, despite the bad last shot, but for losing the shoot-off at 10.3 to 10.5 after he had tied with Christian Planer of Austria.

Abhinav Bindra was tied for the 12th position with a 593, following a series of 99, 100, 98, 100, 99 and 97. Sandeep Tarate was joint 56th in a field of 93 shooters with a 585, with a string of 97, 98, 96, 100, 97 and 97.

In women's air pistol, Shweta Chaudhary finished joint 37th among 69 shooters with a 377 out of 400. She had rounds of 96, 9, 93 and 93. Anisa Sayeed was joint 57th with a 370 while Sushma Rana was joint 59th with a 369.
