RAJAHMUNDRY, APRIL 25. The stage is set for the 29,72,531 voters to exercise their franchise on Monday and elect 20 legislators and three Lok Sabha members from the East Godavari district. (Yellavaram Assembly segment in the district which formed part of Bhadrachalam Lok Sabha seat, went to poll in the first phase on April 20). Hectic activity was witnessed at the two distribution centres at Sri Venkateswara Anam Kalakendra and SKR College for Women here and polling personnel were seen heading towards their places of assignment after collecting EVMs and other polling material. Besides Rajahmundry, distribution centres are set up at Kakinada and Amalapuram. It may be mentioned here that fifty per cent of the total 21,085 polling personnel came from the neighbouring Visakhapatnam district. They reached Rajahmundry and Kakinada by two special trains on Saturday. They reached distribution centres in special buses. According to the district Collector, K.S. Jawahar Reddy, in all 3,225 polling centres were set up in the district. Special arrangements like pressing into service boats to reach water-locked Lanka villages, Dr. Reddy said. After polling EVMs would be kept in strongrooms in Rajahmundry, Kakinada and Amalapuram. According to the Superintendent of Police, Govinda Singh, nearly 4,500 police personnel were being deployed for bandobust duty on the polling day. A helicopter is ready for meeting any exigency, Mr. Singh said. Sensitive and hyper-sensitive areas had been identified and steps were taken to ensure smooth polling in the identified villages also.
