Cuddalore
By Our Special Correspondent
CUDDALORE, APRIL 25. The Superintendent of Police, Rajiv Kumar, has said para-military forces, including one company of the Border Security Force and three companies of the Central Reserve Police Force will be deployed in Cuddalore and Chidambaram Parliamentary constituencies, including the Mangalore Assembly segment. The para-military forces would be on duty from April 27 to May 13, he said. Addressing an all-party meeting convened here on Saturday by the Collector, Gagandeep Singh Bedi, Mr. Rajiv Kumar said these forces would not be stationed at one place. The six election observers also participated. Since, the personnel may not know the local language, in case of disturbance to peace they would act straightaway, and the partymen could not reason out with them. Mr. Rajiv Kumar said it had been noticed that national and State leaders were visiting constituencies for electioneering at odd hours without knowing the ground reality of the places and informing the police. He called upon the parties that it would be better if their itinerary were made known to the police in advance. Whenever there was a possibility of a clash among partymen, it must be informed to the law enforcing authority. For instance, if any party flagpole were illegally removed or damaged, the partymen should not take law into their hands and start retaliating. But it must be reported to the police, he said. Some of the party leaders said that during the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhgam leader, Vaiko's visit to Cuddalore, party flags of the allies put up on the Lawrence Road were removed. Whereas, during the visit of the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhgam leader, M. Karunanidhi, the party flags remained intact on the same road and what were the security personnel doing then, they asked. For the present election, as many as 90 "law and order mobile parties" would be pressed into service, Mr Rajiv Kumar added. He said information regarding violation of the Model Code of Conduct could be passed on to the phone number 04142-212790, and cell number - 98940-82392. So far, 28 cases had been booked against the political parties, he said.
