M.J. Akbar, Padgoankar quit Kashmir panel

PUNE, APRIL 25. Senior journalists M. J. Akbar and Dilip Padgoankar have resigned from the Ram Jethmalani-led Kashmir Committee appointed to facilitate talks with separatist groups.

"We have resigned in view of Mr. Jethmalani contesting the elections," Mr. Padgoankar told reporters on the sidelines of a book release function here. "We (himself and Akbar) resigned from the committee and have sent separate letters to Mr. Jethmalani stating that after the Centre had initiated talks with the Kashmir groups, the Kashmir Committee had lost its relevance since it was established precisely to facilitate such talks," he said. They argued that the prestige the Committee enjoyed was due to its non-partisan character. But with Mr. Jethmalani deciding to contest against the Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the credibility of the Kashmir Committee had come under a cloud. — PTI
