Mahindra United now has 36 points from 18 matches and is placed third behind East Bengal, Kolkata and Dempo Sports Club, Goa.
Akakpo gave the lead in the 31st minute after beating a couple of Haywards' defenders.
But Haywards found the equaliser a minute before the interval through skipper Macpherlin Dudu, who headed home a flag-kick.
Halfway through the second half, the Goan outfit was reduced to 10 men after its goalkeeper Felix D'Souza was given marching orders for tripping Aboagye inside the box. Aboagye converted the resultant spot kick.
Later, Akakpo rounded off the tally with solo effort in the injury time to give the hosts a deserving win. PTI
