Kavali Congress candidate hurt in road mishap

NELLORE: The Congress candidate for Kavali Assembly constituency, Magunta Parvatamma, suffered a fracture in her left leg when her car hit a culvert at Jammalapalem, near Kavali town, on Sunday. She was immediately admitted to the Government Area Hospital, Kavali.

Two specialists from Nellore are attending on her.

Star campaigners decry Renuka's remarks

HYDERABAD: The actors -- Sharath Babu and Suman -- who joined the BJP recently and canvassed extensively in its support, have taken exception to the reported criticism of the Congress leader, Renuka Chowdhary, against film artistes taking part in electioneering.

"She should remember that she first joined the party which was founded by NTR" said Mr. Sharath Babu, while Mr. Suman pointed out that two of the greatest leaders from the south were NTR and MGR. They were addressing a press conference along with Sate BJP general secretary, G. Kishan Reddy, the actor, Bhanuchander, and the TV artiste, Nazir, at the BJP office here on Sunday.

The actors claimed that they witnessed overwhelming response for the BJP during their campaign and people hailed the leadership of the Prime Minister, A.B.Vajpayee. They said the developmental schemes launched by the NDA Government and the proposed projects like inter-linking of the rivers were greatly appreciated by people. They exuded confidence that the NDA Government would return to power at the Centre and the TDP in the State.

Mr. Kishen Reddy appealed to people to strengthen the leadership of Mr. Vajpayee and protect the State from `political instability.'

Call to defeat candidates offering inducements

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Backward Classes Welfare Association has called for defeat of `contractors' and `businessmen' who have allegedly purchased the ticket from the Telugu Desam and the Congress on the eve of the second phase of polling in the State.

R. Krishnaiah, president of the association, in a statement issued here on Sunday appealed to intellectuals and social workers to ensure victory of candidates belonging to backward classes. He said people should expose politicians and parties which distribute money to voters.

PUCL poll watch panel

HYDERABAD: The People's Union for Civil Liberties' Andhra Pradesh Unit is monitoring the second phase of elections in the State on Monday as an `election watch committee' with the co-ordination of the State Election Commission.

Members of the public, who have any complaints, can intimate the committee over telephone numbers 94404 30263, 98483 93857, 08559-321668, 9540-24414736 and 0866-5678167, according to a PUCL release.

TDP worker found murdered

GUNTUR: A Telugu Desam Party (TDP) worker, Ch. Hygreeva, was found murdered on the banks of the Vallabha Cheruvu tank in Narsaraopet town on Sunday.

The Minister for Health, Kodela Sivaprasada Rao, went to the spot to see the body and sought immediate arrest of the culprits. Hygreeva, an accused in the murder of one Ismail in Nakarekallu, was axed to death. Initially both TDP and Congress parties claimed that Hygreeva was their party worker. The TDP activists, however, said that he was with them for the past 20 years.

CM, YSR visit Yerran Naidu

HYDERABAD: The Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, and the former CLP leader, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, called on the former Telugu Desam Parliamentary Party leader, K. Yerran Naidu, at the Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences here on Sunday.

After initial treatment for the injuries he sustained in the mine blast near Srikakulam recently, Mr. Yerran Naidu was shifted from Visakhapatnam to the NIMS for further treatment. An expert from Mumbai, orthopaedic surgeon, P.S. Reddy, advised two-month complete rest for the TDPP leader for the pain in the lumbar region to subside.

Mr. Chandrababu Naidu spoke to Mr. Yerran Naidu sharing his own experience of being caught in the Alipiri mine blast.

The Home Minister, T. Devender Goud, also called on the TDP leader. Among others who visited Mr. Yerran Naidu were the Minister for Textiles, Padala Bhoomanna, and the Chairman of the Global Trust Bank, Ramesh Gelli.

New Executive Director for BHEL

HYDERABAD: Bollepalli Ramachandra Rao, former group general manager of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) at Jhansi in 2001 and later executive director of the Jhansi, Rudrapur and Varanasi plants, has taken over as Executive Director of BHEL, Ramachandrapuram here.

According to a press release, Mr. Rao joined BHEL here as a junior engineer in 1968 and worked in various departments. Later he became general manager, electrical machines.

During his tenure in Hyderabad, Mr. Rao was instrumental in developing computer systems for technological documentation and database and introduction of new products and CNC machines. He was also responsible for design motivations in the manufacture of guillotine dampers, special gas coolers and AC heat exchangers, vacuum pressure impregnation technology for electrical machines.

Rain likely today

Hyderabad: A `local thunderstorm phenomenon' aided by a trough in the lower levels of atmosphere passing through Telangana and Rayalaseema resulted in heavy rain in several places of the State on Sunday.

During the 24-hour period ended this morning, Kurnool received a heavy rainfall of 9 cm followed by Podili and Yemmiganur with 7 cm each, Anantapur 6 cm, Bhadrachalam 4 cm, Jammalamadugu 2 cm and Hanamkonda, Anakapalli and Yellamanchili 1 cm each.

There was rain at a few places in all the three regions of the State. Day temperature fell in coastal Andhra and changed little in Telangana and Rayalaseema. The State's highest temperature of 42 degree Celsius was recorded at Nizamabad.

The State Met Office director, C. V. V. Bhadram, said there would be light to moderate rain at a few places in Rayalaseema and in Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam and East Godavari districts on Monday while it will be isolated in Telangana and rest of coastal Andhra.

Liquor seized

CUDDAPAH: The Cuddapah Excise and Prohibition Inspector, Balakrishnaiah, and staff on Sunday seized 27 cartons of IMFL and beer and arrested a person for clandestinely selling the liquor on `dry day', said the Excise Superintendent, L.C. Muralidhar. They arrested S. Venkata Reddy and seized six liquor cartons and 11 cases of beer from the kitchen of Siva Bar and Restaurant on Trunk road. Meanwhile, 10 cartons of liquor were seized from the backyard of Amrutha Wines at Ravindranagar.

NGO plea to voters

KURNOOL: The convener of VOICE, V.S. Sastry, has asked voters to exercise their right to refuse to vote if they are not satisfied with any of the contestants. In a statement, he said under section 49 (O) of Conduct of Election Rules, 1961, a voter could refuse to vote by mentioning in Form No. 17 A. Similarly, under rule 49 (P), the voter could demand tender vote if his or her vote was cast by somebody. Re-polling would be ordered in the polling station if the tender votes crossed two per cent of the total votes. He said voters whose names were deleted from the list without their knowledge could be formally complain to the election authority for a formal enquiry.

Computer centre opened

TIRUPATI: The Indian Institute of Hardware Technology (IIHT) opened its training centre in Tirupati at Balaji Colony on Sunday. Davuluri.P, senior vice-president of IIHT, inaugurated the local branch. The centre director, Ravindra Raju, said that the institute had global tie-ups with giants like Microsoft, Sun Microsystems, SCO Inc., CompTIA and Novell.

CM condoles deaths

HYDERABAD: The Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, expressed his sorrow over the death of three persons who died when lightning struck them in Kuppam Assembly constituency of Chittoor district on Saturday. Two persons in Managottapalli village, and one in Rambadur village died while two others were injured. Mr. Naidu in a personal message and on behalf of the TDP expressed his condolences to the bereaved family members and said that aid would be extended to the families of the deceased.

Coaching classes

WARANGAL: The Vidyaranya Government Music and Dance College will conduct summer coaching classes - `Kala parichayam' - from April 30 to June 10 in about 50 places in Telangana districts. Those interested can enrol at the nearby venue by paying Rs 50. Candidates of any age group can seek admission.

The college will organise a three-day anniversary celebrations from April 26. Eminent musicians and senior citizens will take part in the festival.
