TIRUCHI, APRIL 25. The Left parties will play an important role in ushering an alternative secular democratic government at the Centre, a possibility after the elections, the all-India secretary of the Communist Party of India (CPI), D. Raja said today. "Our main concern is to dislodge the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Government. We will support an alternative secular government and there is no ambiguity on this," Mr. Raja told presspersons here. Asked whether the CPI would be a part of the Congress-led government at the Centre after the elections, he said the party high command would take a decision on the issue. Mr. Raja said ever since the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) assumed office in 1999, communal clashes had gone up in the country. "The Gujarat happenings are a sinister design for establishing an Hindu Rashtra." Suicides by farmers in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Punjab were due to the anti-farmer policies pursued by the Vajpayee regime. The policies hit the self-reliant economy, economic development and sovereignty of the country hard. The tall claims by the BJP on its Government's achievements were only to fool the people. He cited the Lucknow stampede tragedy and said the BJP never respected the rule of law and the established norms. It stood thoroughly exposed and faced rejection by the masses. He reiterated that the Left parties would emerge a strong force in the alternative secular government. Mr. Raja said projecting an individual for the Lok Sabha elections was nothing but a mockery of democracy. The elections were fought only on issues and achievements. Taking strong exception to the recent statement by the Deputy Prime Minister, L.K. Advani that there was no alternative to Vajpayee to rule the country, he said it revealed the bankruptcy of leadership in the BJP. Referring to the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa's terming of Left parties as "opportunists," Mr. Raja said both the CPI and CPI(M) were committed in opposing communal forces. On the other hand, Ms. Jayalalithaa proved her opportunism by taking one stand in the Assembly elections and a totally opposite stand in the Lok Sabha polls.
