Dies of sunstroke

Bidar APRIL 25.APRIL 25.AP A teacher on election duty died of sunstroke in Humnabad on Friday.

The police said the body of Chandrappa Balappa Myagar (50) of Gurmitkal was discovered near the Irrigation Department office, early on Saturday. The post mortem report revealed the cause of his death. Mr. Myagar had come to Humnabad on April 17. He stayed back in Humnabad as he was feeling uncomfortable. His son, Vijaybhaskar, took possession of the body on Saturday. A case has been registered in Humnabad Police Station.

Ancient temple destroyed

TUMKUR APRIL 25.APRIL 25.AP Some anti-social elements destroyed an ancient Eshwara Temple at Naliganahalli in Pavagada Taluk of Tumkur district on Saturday night. The temple priest, Manjunatha Rao, said in a complaint lodged with the police on Sunday, that the temple was destroyed and several parts of its floor was dug up. He suspected that the anti-social elements did it on the belief that a treasure was hidden under the idols, gopurams and the foundation stones. The ancient temple is on the outskirts of the village. A few months ago, another temple in the village was destroyed and the idol taken away by the culprits. The police are investigating.

Ganja seized in raid

Bidar APRIL 25.APRIL 25.AP Excise officials seized five bags of ganja, put at Rs 1.5 lakh, from a house at Udbal wadi in Humnabad taluk on Sunday. According to the officials, an excise team raided the house of Ramanna Saidannanavar on a tip-off and seized the narcotic. Saidannanavar was accused of growing, storing and selling the banned substance on many occasions earlier. In 2003, ganja, put at Rs. 5 lakh, was seized from him in joint raids by the police and the excise officials, they said. A case has been registered in Chitaguppa Police Station.

Attack condemned

Bidar APRIL 25.APRIL 25.AP The Bidar branch of the Sahitya Kalavidaru and the Nagarika Vedike has strongly criticised the recent attack on the members of the Shimoga branch of the vedike allegedly by members of some communal organisations. According to a press release by the Bidar branch president, Shambhuliga Valadoddi, the members of the group who were staging a street play on Basaveshwara were assaulted and abused and the pictures of the saint displayed at the site were thrown away. Mr. Valadoddi has demanded legal action against the accused.

People block highway

TUMKUR APRIL 25.APRIL 25.AP Residents of Satyamangala and other eastern areas of the city along National Highway 4, on Sunday, blocked traffic on the highway in protest against the lack of water supply in their locality. A large number of them gathered on the road in the forenoon and sat on it with empty pots. The police, who could not persuade them to lift the road blockade, diverted vehicular traffic. The office-bearers of the residents' welfare committees of different extensions, who led the agitation, said the pipeline supplying Hemavathy water to these areas passed underneath the highway. A month ago, the contractors of the Golden Quadrilateral Highways Project dismantled the pipeline for carrying out road widening work. It was restored after on the intervention by the President of Tumkur City Municipal Council, R.N.Satyanarayana, and the councillor, L. Kamala. They, however, alleged that the contractor had again meddled with the pipeline and water supply to the areas had been affected since April 19.

Kagodu hurt in attack

BIDARTUMKURBIDARBIDARTUMKURSHIMOGAUDUPIS, APRIL 25.APRIL 25.AP The Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Kagodu Thimmappa, and two Congress workers were injured when they were attacked by a group of suspected BJP workers at Gadikatte, between Heggodu and Bheemnakone, in Sagar taluk around 10.30 p.m. on Saturday. They were attacked when they were returning after attending an election meeting. While Mr. Thimmappa received minor injuries on his shoulder when his car was attacked, his supporters, who were following him in two jeeps, were grievously injured. They were admitted to the General Hospital in Sagar town. While the car in which Mr. Thimmappa was travelling was slightly damaged in the stone pelting, the two jeeps carrying the Congress workers were extensively damaged. A case has been registered. The situation is said to be under control now. Mr. Thimmappa, talking to The Hindu on the telephone from Sagar this evening, said he had asked his supporters not to retaliate. He suspected that the supporters of his main rival, Beluru Gopalakrishna of the BJP, were involved in the planned attack, which he said, was an act of frustration. Mr. Thimmappa is involved in a straight fight in the election from the Sagar Assembly constituency with his nephew, Mr. Gopalakrishna, who is a staunch supporter of the former Chief Minister, S. Bangarappa.

Lack of facilities decried

BIDARTUMKURBIDARBIDARTUMKURSHIMOGAUDUPIS, APRIL 25.APRIL 25.AP Hundreds of teachers from Dakshina Kannada district, who were appointed polling officers for Udupi district, shouted slogans and staged a protest near the Poornaprajna College here on Saturday for the "poor" facilities provided to them. They said that they arrived in Udupi at 10.30 a.m. but no arrangement was made to keep their luggage. They were not even provided with drinking water, they alleged. They shouted slogans against the Returning Officer of the Udupi Lok Sabha Constituency. They relented when the Assistant Returning Officer came to the spot and apologised for the lack of facilities. The teachers were then taken to various hotels in the city for lunch. The president of the Teachers' Association, G.N. Bhat, said whenever teachers protested restrictions such as ESMA was imposed on them. The officials should provide them proper facilities, he added.

Shreedar Literary Award 2004" for his work, Talemarina Koneyakondi, here on Saturday. Ramadevi Shreedhar presented the award. Jayant Kaikini, writer, was the chief guest. M.G. Hegde introduced the book. The award committee president, T. Narayana Bhat, welcomed the gathering. Kiran Bhat delivered the introductory speech. Rajeshekar Hebbar introduced the guests. C.R. Shanbhog proposed a vote of thanks.A "Kavya-chitra" programme was held on the occasion. Shripad Bhat directed it. Ravi Hebbar, Shravan Kumar Bhat, Sumant Belagandi, Tejashwini, Sambhram, and K.P. Hegde participated in the function.
