The Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Kagodu Thimmappa, and two Congress workers were injured when they were attacked by a group of suspected BJP workers at Gadikatte, between Heggodu and Bheemnakone, in Sagar taluk around 10.30 p.m. on Saturday. They were attacked when they were returning after attending an election meeting. While Mr. Thimmappa received minor injuries on his shoulder when his car was attacked, his supporters, who were following him in two jeeps, were grievously injured. They were admitted to the General Hospital in Sagar town. While the car in which Mr. Thimmappa was travelling was slightly damaged in the stone pelting, the two jeeps carrying the Congress workers were extensively damaged. A case has been registered. The situation is said to be under control now. Mr. Thimmappa, talking to The Hindu on the telephone from Sagar this evening, said he had asked his supporters not to retaliate. He suspected that the supporters of his main rival, Beluru Gopalakrishna of the BJP, were involved in the planned attack, which he said, was an act of frustration. Mr. Thimmappa is involved in a straight fight in the election from the Sagar Assembly constituency with his nephew, Mr. Gopalakrishna, who is a staunch supporter of the former Chief Minister, S. Bangarappa.
