Teachers protest lack of facilities

By Our Staff Correspondent

UDUPI, APRIL 25. Hundreds of teachers from Dakshina Kannada district, who were appointed polling officers for Udupi district, shouted slogans and staged a protest near the Poornaprajna College here on Saturday for the "poor" facilities provided to them.

They said that they arrived in Udupi at 10.30 a.m. but no arrangement was made to keep their luggage. They were not even provided with drinking water, they alleged.

They shouted slogans against the Returning Officer of the Udupi Lok Sabha Constituency. They relented when the Assistant Returning Officer came to the spot and apologised for the lack of facilities.

The teachers were then taken to various hotels in the city for lunch.

The president of the Teachers' Association, G.N. Bhat, said whenever teachers protested restrictions such as ESMA was imposed on them. The officials should provide them proper facilities, he added.
