Kozhikode

KOZHIKODE, APRIL 25. The Kozhikode Medical College Students Union has alleged that the college is facing a severe shortage of teachers. In a statement here, the union chairman, P.K. Anup Ahmed, and the general secretary, Aneesh George, said that the former Health Minister, P. Sankaran, had assured the students, who had been on a State-wide strike in July-August last, of a solution to the problem. However, the Government had not taken any steps so far, they alleged. Degree and PG students were facing difficulties due to the shortage of teachers in the Social and Preventive Medicine department at the Medical College. There was not even one-fourth of the teachers required to take classes, to assist the students in surveys or to provide medical assistance in the preventive clinic. Also, there was not enough teachers in the Pharmacology, Anaesthesia and Biochemistry departments, they said. They pointed out that the Indian Medical Council (IMC) had warned in 2002 that recognition for the college would be withdrawn if the shortage of teachers was not addressed. The IMC had also issued a warning in March last, they said. The union members said that recognition of the PG course - MD in Social and Preventive Medicine (SPM) had been withdrawn in the wake of inaction following the warning. If the Government failed to solve the issue immediately, theunion would call for an agitation, they added.
