Animal sacrifice organised at Mangottukavu

By Our Staff Reporter

PALAKKAD, APRIL 25. The annual sacrifice of animals was organised at the Bhairavan temple located on the Mangottukavu Bhagavathy temple campus at Athipotta, near Alathur, here today.

As many as 50 goats and 100 chickens were offered and the meat distributed to the devotees. Most of the devotees who sacrificed the animals are said to be from Tamil Nadu.

Swami Bhoomananda Teertha of the Hind Navodhana Pratishtan sent a complaint to the District Collector and Superintendent of Police on Saturday, demanding that the sacrifice be stopped.

Swamy Bhoomanda told The Hindu over the phone that animal sacrifice in the temples in Kerala were banned several decades back. "The abolition of animal sacrifice in Hindu temples is a law in force in the State. The district authorities should have enforced it, but they failed to do so. I feel hurt over the failure of the district administration to stop this cruelty," he said. They should not have allowed the cruelty to happen.

He said that the matter would be again taken up with the district administration and the State Government.

The district administration and the police had made elaborate arrangements to prevent any untoward incidents on the temple campus. The police were deployed in strength in front of the temple.
