Chalachitra academy workshop

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM APRIL 25. The Kerala Chalachitra Academy will organise a workshop on painting, sculpture, still photography, movies, television and other visual media here for children aged between 10 and 15. The objective is to create awareness among children about visual media and encourage scientific appreciation. The workshop, to be supervised by well-known artists and technicians, will be organised in two batches. The first batch will be from May 2 to 8 and the second from May 12 to 18. The fee would be Rs. 500. Accommodation would be arranged for children attending the workshop from distant places at their own cost. Application forms and details could be obtained from the Secretary of the Academy at Golf Links Road, Thiruvananthapuram 695003.

`Curb foreign control over church'

The Kerala Rajya Pramukh of Shiv Sena, M.S. Bhuvanachandran, said here on Sunday that the declaration of Malayattoor Church as International Shrine by Vatican was aimed at bringing the Church under foreign control. Mr. Bhuvanachadran said a law should be brought to check foreign control over shrines in the country.

BJP releases cassette

The BJP president, Venkaiah Naidu, on Sunday released the video cassette, Janavidhi 2004, prepared for election campaign of Union Minister of State for Defence, O. Rajagopal, by handing over a copy to the former Additional Chief Secretary, D. Babu Paul. The former Accountant General, James K. Joseph, presided. The video highlights the contributions of Mr. Rajagopal for development of the State.

JD(U) fast for Marad probe

The Janata Dal (United) began a fast in front of the Secretariat here today to press for a CBI probe into the Marad massacre. The fast was inaugurated by the JD(U) national executive member, A. S. Radhakrishnan. He said the JD(U) would launch an indefinite agitation if the Government did not change its stand on the issue.

Management course

The National Institute of Technology, Calicut, and the IBM Advanced Career Education Centre at NITC is starting a techno management course for commerce students. Minimum qualification for this highly oriented course is Pre-Degree\B.Com. Last date of receipt of applications is April 30. Greenpeace launches campaign

KOCHI APRIL 25 . Greenpeace India launched its `Vote for the Planet' election campaign at Eloor today by urging voters to give a vote to save the Periyar river. In a symbolic act, Greenpeace activists dressed in human skeleton suits solicited the votes of people disembarking at the Eloor ferry wharf. They carried a travelling ballot box and asked the people to cast their votes. This was to highlight the importance of conserving the environment and to make it a key electoral issue. The NGO has been campaigning to bring environmental issue onto the electoral agenda. It is running a national outreach programme in select cities, urging voters, especially youngsters, to use their ballot as a powerful tool to force politicians to take up environmental issues. In Kerala, the NGO is focussing on saving the Periyar, which turns highly toxic because of the dumping of industrial effluents on to it, and the village Eloor from toxic air and water.

Support for P.C. Thomas

The BJP Kissan Morcha State general secretary, P. B. Sathyan, today said that the Muvattupuzha UDF election committee convener, K.J. Augustine, had made the statement that the NDA candidate, P.C. Thomas, had not shown any sincerity towards the Lok Sabha constituency because of his fear that the UDF candidate would be defeated. In a statement, he said that voters in the constituency would give a fitting reply to his statement on May 10. He also asked why the UDF had made Mr. Thomas as their candidate in the earlier elections when he had not done anything for the constituency.

Two more Malayalam channels

Kochi, APRIL 25. Two new Malayalam channels, a spiritual and an infotainment, would be launched by November.

At a press conference here today, K.C. John and Mathew Chacko, chairman and Managing Director respectively of the Thiruvalla-based Word Telecasting Company, announced the proposal to launch the two channels. They said the spiritual channel would air evangelical programmes while the entertainment channel would broadcast programmes based on family values.

The programmes had been selected after conducting a two-year study. The digital technology based channels would use Insat 2E satellite for its transmission.

The proposed names of the channels are Power Vision (Gospel) and Victory TV.

Thangal to campaign

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, APRIL 25. The Indian Union Muslim League leaders, Panakkad Mohammedali Shihab Thangal, P.K.Kunhalikutty, and Abdul Samad Samadani, would campaign for the UDF candidate for Thiruvananthapuram and Chirayinkeezh, V.S. Sivakumar, and M.I. Shanavas, on Wednesday. These leaders would address public meetings at Vettimuricha Kotta at 5 p.m. and Kacheri Junction in Nedumangad at 6.30 p.m., the district general secretary of the Indian Union Muslim League, Bheemapally Rasheed, said in a release here today.

Public meeting

The Finance Minister, K. Sankaranarayanan, would address public meetings at Pazhayakada in Parassala at 5 p.m. and Vellarada at 6 p.m. on Monday as part of the election campaigning of the UDF candidate for Thiruvananthapuram, V.S.Sivakumar, UDF central election committee has informed. Mr. Sivakumar would campaign in different parts of Parassala on Monday.

TV awards

The third television awards of the Solar Film Society will be presented at Tagore Theatre on Monday evening. As many as 37 artistes will receive the awards from the directors, Shyama Prasad, Venu Nagavally, Viji Thampy, Thulasidas and T.S. Suresh Babu. The award committee chairman, Aranmula Hariharaputhran, would preside.

Vigyan Rail

The Kerala University Vice-Chancellor, B.Ekbal, would inaugurate the science exhibition on wheels, `Vigyan Rail' at the Central Railway Station at 11.30 a.m. on Monday. The exhibition will be opened to the public between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. till April 30. The entrance to the exhibition is free, a Southern Railway release said.

Applications invited

KOZHIKODE APRIL 25. The Nettur Technical Training Foundation (NTTF) has invited applications for admission to its various technical training courses. According to a release, admissions will be on the basis of entrance tests, to be held at various centres, including Kozhikode. The last date for submission of completed forms is May 31. The forms will be available at the Centre for Information and Guidance India (CIGI) office, Golf Link Road, Chevayur, Kozhikode--673 017.
