MANGALORE, APRIL 25. The campaign by political parties in nine Assembly segments in Dakshina Kannada, which ended on Saturday, was a low-key affair. The campaign was peaceful, and most of the roads, circles, and buildings in the city and at Puttur, Sullia, Bantwal, Belthangady, Surathkal, and Vitla were free from the menace of posters, banners, and cutouts. Due to the restrictions imposed by the Election Commission, political parties, including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Congress and the Janata Dal (Secular), concentrated on door-to-door campaign. In the Sullia (reserved) Assembly Constituency, the BJP candidate, S. Angara, and the Janata Dal (Secular) candidate, K. Kushala, visited many Dalit colonies on Saturday. There are 35,000 Dalit voters in the constituency. In the Belthangady segment, Vasantha Bangera of the Janata Dal (Secular) and his brother, Prabhakara Bangera of the BJP, are in the fray. In the Bantwal segment, the Transport Minister, B. Ramanatha Rai, is facing the former president of CAMPCO, B. Nagaraja Shetty of the BJP. In the Moodbidri segment, the former Minister, K. Amarnatha Shetty of the Janata Dal (S), is facing the former MLA, K. Abhayachandra of the Congress.
