Subway encroached

Sir, — There is a pedestrian subway near the Park railway station, which is being used by the public to reach Central Station from Park Station and vice-versa. This is being occupied by hawkers and business is going well in the subway, causing nuisance to the public. Pocket picking is prevalent due to heavy rush. This nuisance by the hawkers should be stopped forthwith and the subway should be made a free passage for the public.

Obstacles on road

Sir, — Vehicles are parked in the no parking area, opposite the Mint bus stop. Streetlights do not burn along the Mint Bridge. There is no halt and go signboard on the Mint bridge while one climbs from Mint bus stop and Sri Krishna cinema. The Moolakothalam burial ground is situated nearby. Several vehicles take a `U' turn on the Mint Bridge.

Why the discrepancy?

Sir, — I am a rail commuter. I park my two-wheeler at the Guindy railway station stand. The prescribed parking fee for two-wheeler is Rs. 2.50 a day and Rs. 50 a month, which is clearly mentioned in the counterfoil of the receipt and season pass and also on the display board. But the contractor now charges Rs. 3.50 and Rs. 70 respectively. When asked why this difference, the answer was vague and vulgar. I would request the authorities concerned to take prompt remedial action.

Contrary to report

Sir, — The Hindu had published last month that Chennai Telephones are refunding deposit to the customers within a month of the surrender of telephone. Subsequently it was published that Chennai Telephones are making arrangements to refund the deposit immediately.I had surrendered my OYT Telephone on January 8, 2004. I had visited their office several times and gave a letter for the refund of deposit on March 26, 2004. But the deposit is yet to be refunded.

Deposit not refunded

Sir, — I surrendered my telephone along with Line Jack to JTO/ Guduvancherry telephone exchange, on February 28, 2004. Despite several reminders, the refund of deposit has not yet been done. Why should there be any trouble or time lag in promptly returning the customer's money! Why hold on to it?

In poor state

Sir, — The Mandaveli Street, which is connecting Mandaveli market and Santhome High Road is a main thoroughfare. Since the Metrowater workers have been digging at the junction of Mandaveli market and R.K. Mutt Road for more than a year now, the street is now in a pitiable condition, covered with hard black stones and red sand. And when the vehicles ply the red sand and dust get deposited in houses and shops.

In fact, very recently all the adjacent streets and even by-lanes in Mandaveli and Mylapore have been totally relaid, except Mandaveli Street.

Reliance phone service

Sir, — I have been using Reliance mobile No. 044-32749790. On March 25, 2004, when the mobile was switched on, it became blank. Through Reliance Webworld, it was sent to their service centre for correction of the fault. After about 10 days, it was received.

When I switched on the line "This facility is not available on your number" was displayed. Complaints No. 10105499 and 10302686 were lodged.

Each time I call up, their operators give the stock reply that the problem will be solved soon. Their higher-ups do not come on the line when I call up; nor does their network operation centre call back.

Name not found in voter list

Sir, — My name is not in the latest electoral rolls, as per information obtained from telephonic help-line, provided by the election authorities. I have voted in all the previous elections as my name was in the list.

I am living at the present address for the past 23 years.

My husband's name is included in the latest list. I had submitted Form 6 for inclusion again; but the name is still omitted. I hold a voter ID card.

Laughing stock

Sir, — I have registered my name for "Off-Line" residual electors (Form 001) on November 27, 2002 at Poonamallee taluk office. In the beginning, I asked the village officer at VOA Office, Palavedu, Chennai-600055.

He asked me to contact Poonamallee taluk office, where I had been photographed. I have been going to the taluk office many a time.

Each time when I enquire about the photo identity card, they ask me to come the next day. In spite of many visits along with the receipt for the photograph taken, they ignore me.

Poor service

Sir, — This is with reference to news item `Forum pulls up Bank' (The Hindu, April, 14) wherein the court has remarked about the poor service extended by the bank, (SBI). Even private banks are no exception.

Recently I went to Ashok Nagar branch of ICICI bank to open an account, I was asked to come again as the `concerned person' was not available. Even my letter to their Regional Office evoked no response.

Erect a hand pump

Sir, — It is a well-known fact that consumption of water in summer for every household is more, and comparatively its availability is very scant as the wells and borewells normally go dry during the summer. We, the residents of VOC Street, Devaraj Nagar, Saligramam, are also not spared of the hardship. The present available source for the residents of VOC Street, and also to a section of Raja Street, VOC Street extension, Kulasekaran Street, is the supply from the sintex tank installed in our street.

In this context, I request the authorities, on behalf of the residents of VOC Street, to put a hydraulic hand-pump (Mark II) at a suitable place in our street to extract water.

Don't waste water

Sir, — Apropos the news item on Metrowater conducting tests on Veeranam pipes, it is estimated that about 600 million litres of water will be required for flushing operation alone. Care should, therefore, be taken to ensure that this huge quantity of water flushed out, is not allowed to go waste but properly sent back into the ground for recharging the water table. Industrial establishments can also think of using this water for their needs after treatment.

Strange logic

Sir, — I reserved tickets for my wife and myself by Kumbakonam fast passenger for travel on April 29. I do not know the logic of Railways in not allowing senior citizen concession for travel by a fast passenger train.

Mail not delivered

Sir, — Recently my son sent me two Airmail letters from the U.S. I am in receipt of one of them. The other important one sent on April 1, 2004 has not been received till date. On earlier occasions also letters sent from the U.S. were not delivered. We lose confidence in our postal system.

Bad roads

Sir, — The roads going from Vijayanagar bus stand in Velachery to Tambaram have to be improved. The construction of MRTS has not helped. Pankaj Kumar Sinha,
