MADURAI, APRIL 25. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has identified road accident as a major epidemic of non-communicable diseases, which has affected the modern society, according to M. Chidambaram, newly elected president of the Madurai branch of the Indian Medical Association (IMA). He was presiding over the platinum jubilee celebrations of the Madurai branch here today. He said injuries sustained in road accidents had their epidemiological pattern like any other disease agent, host and environment. Though everyone recognised the tragedy of disability and premature death from injury, only a few equated it with their global health concern. He appealed to all IMA members to join hands to prevent road accidents by calling on the authorities to ensure better traffic control, to conduct seminars and patient education programmes, to install better road signs, to ensure efficient planning of highway engineering and uniformity of road luminance, to identify accident-prone spots, to teach defensive driving, and to hand down stringent punishment for the erring road-users. He listed the programmes of the Madurai branch for the next year, which included lectures on neo-natalogy and paediatric topics such as foetal medicine. Topics including trauma and diseases of women would get attention in the second phase, while in the third phase, topics on geriatrics and rehabilitation would be given importance, Dr. Chidambaram said. Kalavathy Ponniraivan, Dean, Madurai Medical College, James Pandian, Dean, Madras Medical College, and K. S. Mayil Vaganan, secretary, spoke. The following were installed office-bearers at the general body meeting held today: M. Chidambaram (president); M. Amanullah (vice-president); K. S. Mayil Vahanan (secretary); Balasubramaniam (joint secretary); and R. Raveendran (treasurer).
