Complete work on jetties Sir,--The condition of the Fort Kochi Customs Jetty has worsened and it is turning into a threat to passengers' lives. The MLA from Mattancherry, V. K. Ibrahim Kunju, has allotted Rs. 25 lakhs from his development fund for the reconstruction of the jetty. Although it is has been reported that preparations for casting the piles for the jetty has begun already, the actual construction work on it is yet to begin. With the monsoon fast approaching, passengers will be hard put to use the jetty in its present condition. The problems will be more acute for women and children. The State Water Transport Department authorities don't seem to be bothered about the condition of the jetties, at both Fort Kochi and Mattancherry. It is not known why the reconstruction work on the Mattancherry jetty has not yet begun. I request the Director of the State Water Transport Department, the local MLA and the Minister for Water Transport to ensure that work on the jetty is completed at the earliest. This alone will save the passengers from hardship. H. Ravikumar Pai Paschima Kochi Passengers' Association
Check the slide Sir,--Lately, I am afraid, "this noxious filthy pastime" as King James of England called it, has reappeared. I mean, over the last four weeks. The initial strictness with which restrictions on smoking was being enforced in the State has slipped. Let me reassure youngsters under 20, it has been proved beyond doubt that tobacco is wholly harmful and is a major cause of cancer. Tobacco has no recuperative or relaxing properties and if at all, they are temporary and delusive. On the contrary, the habit-forming powers of tobacco are indeed hard to get over. Moreover, non-smokers like me find the fumes intolerable, especially in air-conditioned offices, banks and restaurants where visitors sometimes are so inconsiderate as to start smoking. In fact, it is high time that civic authorities checked and arrested this backslide. P. R. Krishna Narayanan Thevara
