HYDERABAD, APRIL 25. Thirty-seven persons were killed in the year 2003-04, as against 59 the previous year in accidents involving trains run by the South Central Railway. Ten of these were road users, the statistics provided by the SCR said. The toll of 59, the highest in a year since 2000-01, included 20 road users and a Railway staff member. As many as 24 road users lost their lives in mishaps in 2000-01. The accidents were categorised as collisions, derailments (mid-section and at stations) and those occurring at level crossings and fires in trains. The number of such mishaps was 36 in the years 2000-01 and 2002-03, as against 28 in 2003-04 and 27 the previous year. The statistics further revealed that 50 persons suffered grievous injuries during the year 2002-03, which also accounted for 39 fatalities and 107 incidents of simple injuries. Railway officials claimed that accidents at level crossings declined by 45 per cent, with no mishap reported at manned gates during the last four years. Accidents in general fell by 22 per cent as also derailments by five per cent.
