Congress fears violence in Guntur

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, APRIL 25. The Congress has demanded extra security and special observers for Vemur and Ponnur Assembly segments in Guntur district alleging violence and intimidation of Congress workers and voters by TDP activists.

In a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner, T.S. Krishna Murthy, the party has listed four villages in Vemur and one village in Ponnur where "TDP candidates have unleashed terror and violence."

The Congress alleged that the election observers, police and district administration and the Chief Electoral Officer of AP have been "silent spectators" to this violence. Also, all Ministers camping in the Coastal districts must return to Hyderabad to prevent them from distributing money. The letter states, "The entire system of free and fair poll has been vitiated by blatant abuse of power and money."

It adds that in at least 20 Assembly constituencies, police have seized huge quantity of liquor and money. The Congress also alleged "massive storing of election disruption material like stones, soda bottles, sticks, firearms by TDP cadre" and complained that its representations to the local Election officials are "falling on deaf ears."

In a separate letter to the Chief Electoral Officer, M. Narayana Rao, the Congress has objected to the airing of a programme being telecast by ETV-2, terming it "an advertisement campaign under guise of a programme." It demanded immediate halt to all political advertisements and action against both the TV channel and the TDP.
