Stevens' sacrifice
BRISBANE: Australian swimmer Craig Stevens announced his withdrawal from the 400m freestyle event at the Athens Olympics, giving defending champion Ian Thorpe a chance to defend his title.
Thorpe failed to qualify for the 400m at the Australian Olympic trials last month after being disqualified for a false start in the qualifying heats.
Stevens qualified for the 400m behind Grant Hackett. ``The decision I've made is to stand aside in the 400m in the hope that I'll get to see Ian swim that race in the final on Day 1 at the Olympic Games,'' Stevens said on Monday.
