Violence mars U.P. polls

LUCKNOW, APRIL 26. Barring stray incidents of violence in which two persons were killed and several injured, the first phase of polling for 32 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh passed off peacefully with an estimated 50 to 55 per cent voters exercising their franchise.

The Chief Electoral Officer, Vijay Sharma, said complaints of rigging and booth capturing were received from about a dozen constituencies.

One person was shot dead at Yusufpur in Ghazipur district when an unidentified gunman opened fire in which three people, said to be BJP supporters, were also injured.

In Mahadeva village of Basti district, one person was beaten to death by members of a rival group when he was on his way to cast his vote, reports said.

The Congress candidate from Pratapgarh, Ratna Singh, and his Samajwadi Party rival, Akshay Pratap Singh, received minor injuries when their supporters clashed at Latifpur village during polling. Both sides registered FIRs in this connection at Sangramgarh police station. According to a report from Gonda, a Police Inspector and a presiding officer were injured in firing and bomb blast at Murli Davariya polling booth. — PTI
