Distraint proceedings against RDO

By Our Staff Reporter

THANJAVUR, APRIL 26. Distraint proceedings were launched against the Revenue Divisional Office here with the court Ameens (senior bailiffs) taking over its property today, as per a court order in a case relating to payment of compensation to villagers whose land was acquired for constructing an Indian Air Force station at Thanjavur.

Chairs, typewriters and a jeep were taken away. According to Rajendran, advocate, representing the villagers, the IAF sought to expand the air station to make it a full-fledged air base.

Nearly 1,586.37 acres in nine villages were acquired in 1991. In 1994, compensation was awarded to the landowners. Some went to the Thanjavur sub-court on the grounds that the market value fixed by the IAF was inadequate.

It enhanced the amount. As the landowners felt this was inadequate, they approached the High Court.

The High Court enhanced the compensation and directed the RDO to pay the amount. But since it failed to pay, a case was filed in sub-court.

The sub-court ordered it to pay the enhanced amount. Since it failed to comply, distraint proceedings were initiated against the RDO.
