Villagers boycott polls

KURNOOL: Residents of Bantanahal in Chippagiri of the Aluru constituency and Bollavaram in the Kodumur constituency boycotted polls on Monday. The voters at Bantanahal said they were doing so in protest against neglect of their village by elected representatives and authorities in the past. At Bollavaram, the voters have been boycotting the election for the past several years as the village was under the influence of CPI-ML group.

There were complaints galore from public that their names were deleted from the list. The voters were anguished by removal of their names without their knowledge.

At Veldurthi, the agents said 10 voters who came to the polling station with photo identity cards were disappointed by not finding their names. At Gummakonda in Dhone constituency, M. Gopal, Laxmidevi and Devaranga Reddy complained that their names were deleted from the list without their knowledge.

In Kurnool city, scores of people complained that their names were missing. The names of many officials and government employees were missing despite holding the photo identity cards.

Power supply to coalmines restored

ADILABAD: Power supply to the Singareni coalmines of Bellampalli, Goleti and Madaram of Bellampalli was restored on Monday morning after it was disrupted on Saturday night. According to an official spokesman of the Singareni Collieries Company Limited, Bellampalli, a power transmission tower at Mandamarri collapsed due to the gales on April 24 evening. This tower supplied power directly to the Bellampalli mines from Ramagundam.

Mining activity was laid off on Saturday night during the last shift between 11.30 pm and 7.30 am. As such the SCCL suffered production loss to the tune of Rs. 3.15 lakhs. Though emergency measures were taken by the SCCL to get power supply from the APTransco to the mines and essential services, its residential colonies housing about 6,500 quarters were bereft of power supply. It would take another four to five days for power supply to be restored.

Aid to hailstorm-hit sought

HYDERABAD: The State secretary of the Communist Party of India, S. Sudhakar Reddy, on Monday expressed surprise over the reported statement of the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, that the Government was unable to help the hailstorm-hit people of Ranga Reddy and Nalgonda districts because of restrictions imposed by the Election Commission.

In a statement issued here, Mr. Reddy described Mr. Naidu's contention as an "excuse". He maintained that officials had all opportunities to extend assistance to the needy. He demanded that the Government take all necessary steps to come to the rescue of storm-affected.

According to the statement, mango orchards, paddy crop and vegetables were badly hit by hailstorm in the two districts. Asbestos and tiled roofs of many houses and huts were damaged and trees uprooted. In the Metpalli area of Ranga Reddy district, about 200 goats, sheep and other cattle had perished, Mr. Reddy, who toured the affected areas along with the Congress and CPI(M) leaders, said.

Chief of Naval Staff visits ENC

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Chief of Naval Staff, Madhvendra Singh, on Monday reviewed the submarine operations of the Eastern Naval Command (ENC).

Admiral Singh, who is presiding over the annual Commanders conference scheduled to be held here from Tuesday to Thursday, spent a day at sea by sailing on board INS Sindhuvir, a frontline submarine of the ENC.

He was accompanied by the Commdore Commanding Submarines of Eastern Region, S.H. Subramanian.

Later in the day, the Navy Chief visited various shore establishments and the Naval Maritime Academy.

A host of senior Naval officers from all over the country, including the Vice-Chief of the Naval Staff, Arun Prakash, the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command, Madan Jit Singh, the FOC-in-C of Southern Naval Command, Yashwant Prasad, the Chief of Materials, P. Jaitley, and the Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff, S.V. Gopalachari, arrived in the city to attend the three-day conference. The FOC-in-C of ENC, O.P. Bansal, hosted a banquet in honour of Admiral Singh and the visiting officers.

Former MLA dead

HYDERABAD: Chittajallu Venkata Krishna Rao (92), one of the older generation communists who organised the working class movement in the State, died at his home-town, Kakinada, on Monday. He suffered a lot for participating in the freedom struggle.

Rao was elected to the State Assembly in the 1952, 1967 and 1972 elections from Kakinada. He was an independent for a major part of his life, but was always committed to the ideals of communism and the cause of the working class.

He held the view that even after the fall of socialism in the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, and despite the current worldwide counter-movement towards market economy, there was no real alternative to the ideal and ideology of socialism.

The Marxist Study Forum is holding a memorial meeting in Rao's honour on May 1 at Urdu Hall, Himayatnagar.

BSF constable hurt as carbine goes off

ELURU: In a freak incident, a Border Security Force (BSF) constable, B.C. Mandal, was injured by a stray bullet at Konteru in Yalamanchili mandal falling under the Narasapur Assembly segment in West Godavari district.

According to the Palacole Circle Inspector, Narra Venkateswara Rao, a carbine which fell on the ground while being snatched from another BSF constable, P. Giri Babu, by a violent youth went off, piercing a couple of bullets through the leg of the constable. The injured constable, hailing from Punjab, was rushed to the government hospital at Palacole. The incident occurred when the BSP personnel were quelling a clashing mob at a polling station at Konteru.

Labourer dies in road mishap

CHITTOOR: A labourer, Balaji Rao (59), belonging to Reddigunta died on the spot when he was hit by a tipper on the Chittoor-Vellore road here on Monday. Balaji was proceeding towards Chittoor on a bicycle when he was hit by the tipper from behind. The traffic police are investigating.

Five cops hurt in accident

KURNOOL: A woman Sub Inspector and four constables were hurt when the vehicle in which they were travelling overturned near Nagaluti in Nandikotkur constituency on Monday. According to reports, the police team was on escort duty of the Congress candidate Gowru Charita. The injured personnel were shifted to hospital.

APTF to seek legal option

SRIKAKULAM: The Andhra Pradesh Teachers' Federation (APTF) will pursue the legal options for implementation of GOs 505 and 538 with regard to teachers' common seniority, the APTF district general secretary, S. Rajasekhar, said.

New GM for Bailadila

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Bailadila Iron Ore Project (BIOP) of National Mineral Development Corporation at Kirandul in Madhya Pradesh has a new general manager, P. Karyampudi.

Prior to this assignment, Mr. Karyampudi was general manager of NMDC at Hyderabad and was subsequently entrusted with the responsibilities of GM, BIOP Deposit No. 14 and 11/C, Kirandul.

Relief for ryots demanded

KARIMNAGAR: The former APCC media cell coordinator and contesting candidate from Karimnagar Assembly segment, Ponnam Prabhakar, demanded that the government provide a compensation of Rs 10,000 per hectare to farmers who lost their crops due to the recent hailstorm in the district.

Talking to newsmen, Mr. Prabhakar said that the hailstorm during the one week had wreaked havoc by destroying crops and damaging several houses. He said that the Thimmapur and other upland mandals were worst affected. In Thimmapur mandal, several farmers who had taken lands on lease for cultivation, bore the brunt of the nature's calamity. He urged the district administration to provide compensation on humanitarian grounds.

Funds to meet water shortage

KARIMNAGAR: The Collector, Sumita Dawra, has announced sanctioning of Rs. 5 lakh for drinking water requirements of Kathalapur mandal on Monday. The Collector, who visited the hailstorm affected villages in the mandal, had announced the amount following representation by the villagers about the prevailing drinking water problem in the mandal. She also assured to provide necessary compensation to the hailstorm affected farmers
