Congress cannot protect secularism: Manik Sarkar

By Our Staff Reporter

THRISSUR, APRIL 26. The Tripura Chief Minister and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) politburo member, Manik Sarkar, has said that the Congress cannot be depended upon to form a secular Government at the Centre.

Addressing an election meeting organised by the LDF here this evening, he said that the BJP and the Congress were similar in many respects. "The Congress cannot protect secularism. They did nothing to prevent the demolition of the Babri Masjid. The party could not prevent attacks against the minorities in Gujarat and Orissa,'' he said.

Mr. Sarkar said the UDF Government and the NDA Government followed similar economic policies. "The policies are anti-national", he said.

Mr. Sarkar said that the RSS was trying to make India a theocratic State using its political platform, the BJP.
