The sky remained overcast on Sunday morning, while suburbs experienced mild showers.
CHENNAI, APRIL 26. Meenambakkam and Tambaram witnessed mild showers on Sunday, even as Nungambakkam continued to experience sweltering heat. In the 24-hour-period that ended 8-30 a.m. on Monday, Nungambakkam recorded 16 mm rainfall and Tambaram 5 mm. The maximum temperature registered by Nungambakkam was 34.8 degree Celsius, a departure of one degree from the normal. Sadly for the city residents, anxiously awaiting a spell of rain in Chennai reservoirs, were disappointed as none of the sources experienced any rain. The storage of the reservoirs stood at 165 million cubic feet (mcft), which will take care of about 10 days' supply at the present level of 175 million litres a day (MLD). Meanwhile, officials of Metrowater have started carrying out flushing operations of the pipelines being laid for the New Veeranam Project. The operations are being done segment wise. They say finishing touches are being given. On completing all the minor works, flushing of the entire pipeline will be done "in one go." As for the commissioning of deep borewells in Neyveli taluk (about 225 km from the city), eight are ready. In respect of about 20 more borewells, works, such as taking power connections and laying of interconnection pipes are yet to be completed. Metrowater proposes to draw water from 30 borewells at a time, each yielding two MLD.
