No respite from heat

NEW DELHI APRIL 26. There is no respite from the heat for Delhiites as the weatherman has forecast a rise in day temperature on Tuesday. The maximum temperature is expected to be around 37 degrees Celsius.

The maximum temperature recorded at Safdarjung on Monday was 35.2 degrees Celsius while the minimum was 21.6 degrees Celsius. At Palam, the maximum temperature was 36.7 degrees Celsius and minimum was 23.9 degrees Celsius.

The maximum and minimum relative humidity at Safdarjung was 79 per cent and 33 per cent respectively. While the maximum and minimum relative humidity at Palam was 71 per cent and 30 per cent respectively.

Police Chief lauds cops

NEW DELHI APRIL 26. The Police Commissioner, K.K. Paul, today lauded the work of the Crime Branch of the Delhi police, particularly the handling of two recent sensational and complex cases.

A senior police officer said the Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime), B.K. Gupta, called a meeting of the Crime Branch officials and conveyed Dr. Paul's appreciation of their efforts. The officials have been asked to keep up the good work.

The handling of the murder case of Captain Rajan Aggarwal, who was killed on the merchant ship Crimson Galaxy on April 4, and the Central Board of Secondary Education pre-medical test paper leak, which was detected on April 10, came in for special praise from the Commissioner. While the Assistant Commissioner of Police, R.S. Dahiya, handled the Captain's murder case, in which two trainee cadets were held for allegedly killing Captain Aggarwal in a fit of rage, ACP Shivendra Kant Tiwari is handling the CBSE PMT paper leak.

Fire cases

NEW DELHI APRIL 26. A jail van, which had brought undertrials from Tihar Central Jail to Tis Hazari courts in North Delhi, caught fire under mysterious circumstances today. However, no one was injured.

According to a Fire Department spokesperson, the van caught fire around 4-15 p.m. At the time, the van was empty and standing outside the court premises waiting for the undertrials to return after hearing of their cases. The fire was doused within an hour.

In another incident, a garment shop caught fire in the posh South Extension Market in South Delhi today. According to the police, the fire broke out in garment store, Gopalji, in South-Extension, Part-II, around 8 a.m. About a dozen fire tenders were pressed into service and the fire was doused in about four hours. While nobody was injured in the incident, property estimated at several lakhs of rupees was destroyed in the blaze. The police believe that short circuit caused the blaze.

Pickpockets held

NEW DELHI APRIL 26. Three persons allegedly involved in pickpocketing in moving buses were arrested near the Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT) in North Delhi on Sunday. Three knives were allegedly recovered from their possession.

The accused -- Virju, Ved Prakash and Manmohan -- were arrested while the police were conducting a bus-checking exercise near the ISBT bus shelter. They were travelling in a blueline bus plying on route 832. When they noticed that the police were checking the buses, they tried to flee but were overpowered.

Suicide case

NEW DELHI APRIL 26. A 20-year-old labourer allegedly committed suicide by hanging from the ceiling of his house at Sangam Vihar in South Delhi this afternoon.

The deceased, Anil, lived in a rented accommodation along with his brother. He belonged to Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh. The local police have initiated inquest proceedings into the matter and sent the body to the hospital for post-mortem.
